A new test for bowel cancer could be on the horizon
A new test for bowel cancer could be on the horizon
The test detects an enzyme, called Tumour M2-PK, which is a by-product of tumour growth. The enzyme leaks from the cancerous tissue into the bowel and can then be found in faeces.
The researchers, based at Giessen University in Germany, found that levels of the enzyme in faeces not only confirmed a diagnosis, but also signalled how advanced the disease was.

Health Alert: Melanoma procedure
Health Alert: Melanoma procedure
Treating the deadly form of skin cancer often means multiple surgeries, but doctors have designed a new test that may spare patients at least one of those procedures.
Dr. Shidham says, "In 30 minutes we can see if the cells are there or not," much quicker than the days it normally takes to find out if melanoma is in the lymph nodes.
This test doesn't have to go through a FDA approval process. Information about the MCW Melanoma Cocktail is available in the online journal CytoJournal.

The new way to fight deadly tumors is to gum up their many growth engines, in several ways, all at once.
But Gleevec turned out to be an exception. Two other designer drugs, AstraZeneca's Iressa (for lung cancer) and ImClone Systems' Erbitux (for colon cancer), are showing far more modest results. Iressa shrinks tumors in only 10% of lung cancer patients. Erbitux delays cancer's progress by roughly three months.

American Cancer Society Needs Beta Testers
American Cancer Society Needs Beta Testers
So the American Cancer Society is developing a new PDA-based application that is targeted at primary care physicians and other health care industry workers called "C-Tools 2.0." I don't know what it does, exactly - fights cancer, I guess - but since I am destined to die a horrible, choking, sputtering death thanks to my poor diet and stolen cigarettes, it would be nice if any of our readers that work in the health care field would like to help them beta test it. Do you really want to be the one person who didn't help them prevent the black rot that forces me to claw out my own lungs from my heaving chest?
Fine, do it for David Neff, the ACS's Director of Online Communications, you heartless bastards.
Read - C-Tools 2.0 [Cancer]
David told me should send an email to "testing" if you are interested in giving it a whirl. The domain would be "acspdasupport.com." Oh, and I'll list the different tools after the jump/break/link. What's this 'Tobacco Cessation Tool?' Sounds like quackery to me!

As a Hormone Substitute, Soy Is Ever More Popular, but Is It Safe?
While some experts tout soy as a cancer preventative, others say that it may elevate the risk in postmenopausal women who consume large amounts, especially in isoflavone supplements.
There have been no double-blind controlled studies, the gold standard in scientific research, looking at the safety of soy in humans
